Hounouring Diversity in Division I
Resources

I found this video while looking for a song about acceptance and inclusion. The song is about promoting world peace but also points out that while we may have superficial differences such as looks or where we live that we are all humans wanting the same basic things out of life. (to be happy and live in peace)
Materials
3 by 5 Index Cards
Introduction
I would start the activity by playing the above video/song in which Peter Alsop teaches the children to sing his world peace song that points out that while we might look different, we are all still people and peace starts with acceptance.
Body
After the video I would lead the students in a discussion about differences we cannot see. Such as how we learn, our favorite activities, things we do or do not do well. I would share my own learning difficulties as a child. (I was diagnosed as hyper-active)
I would then pass out the 3 by 5 cards and have them write one fact about themselves that they do not think their classmates know about them and that they are willing to share. You may have to scribe for those students who are still struggling with their writing. I would then collect the cards, shuffle them and pass them back out. (Make sure nobody gets their own card) They would then need to go around the room and try to find the author of the card that they have in their possession. When they find that person have them write their name on the card. They would also need to find the person who has their card and write that person’s name on their card. So each student will have one fact and two names on the card they are holding.
Conclusion
Have the students gather on the reading area. (or space that is good for class discussion) Go over class rules about respectful sharing. Have them share some facts they learned about each other. Go over the word tolerance and what that means. Prompt students to come up with strategies on how they can practice tolerance and inclusion. Thank them for their participation and move on to to next lesson.
